EMDR Therapy
An evidence-based psychological treatment used effectively by psychologists and psychiatrists internationally for more than 30 years.
What is EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychological treatment in which bilateral stimulation (usually through eye movements) is used to process traumatic memories which allows normal healing from symptoms and emotional distress to occur.
EMDR Therapy effectively helps your brain to join the dots of a neural network, so it recognises an event is in the past rather than still occurring in the present. This approach can assist with resolving all types of symptoms from trauma, including:
- Flashbacks and nightmares
- Hypervigilance
- Unwanted thoughts or images
- Anxiety, panic attacks, phobias
- Shame and worthlessness
- Social problems
- Easily startled
- Numbing or shutting down
- Depression
- Grief and loss
- Sleep disturbance and difficulties
- Irritability or outbursts of rage or anger
- Chronic pain, illness and medical issues
- OCD
- Self-harm
- Violence and abuse
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other stress-related issues
EMDR Therapy considers all emotional, psychological, and behavioural difficulties are 'stuck' or 'frozen in time', or ‘unprocessed’ memories.
EMDR Therapy goes beyond “scratching the surface” of symptoms. The approach changes the way the brain processes information and experiences. Once an issue has been fully reprocessed and healing has taken place, it is unlikely to re-arise in the future.
EMDR Therapy has been referred to as an “accelerated emotional processing method”, as it has been clinically shown to produce results within a shorter time than many other traditional therapeutic approaches. EMDR Therapy does not require you to re-live or describe in detail the events during counselling sessions, rather it promotes processing in a more rapid and structured way, reducing the risk of you being emotionally flooded and re-traumatised.

“Talking helps, but does not seem to get to the part of the brain where the memory is ‘frozen’. This is why distressing events continue to be experienced and relived, despite telling the story or talking about it. These experiences are living in ‘trauma time’ and may continually be re-experienced. EMDR Therapy is a therapeutic approach that goes ‘beyond words’ to resolve the memories that get stuck.”

Tamara offers a number of evidence-based EMDR protocols for recent, ongoing and prolonged traumatic stress. Tamara enhances these protocols through EMDR 2.0 techniques. These protocols can be delivered to individuals either face to face or remotely. These protocols can be delivered blind to therapist, which means you do not need to talk about what has happened.
Treatment involves an initial 60+ minute session for assessment, followed by reatment sessions of 60+ minutes each delivered ideally weekly to fortnightly.
